New research suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
