No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
